Amit Singh First Candidate in the Country to Sign

Arlington, Virginia – On Friday, Amit Singh, Congressional candidate for Virginia’s 8th District, signed the "Change Congress" pledge, which promotes a "[n]ational movement to end corruption in America’s Congress." The pledge is organized by Lawrence Lessig, a professor at Stanford Law School and author of Code, The Future of Ideas, and Free Culture.

"I'm honored to be the first candidate in the country to sign the 'Change Congress' pledge," said Singh. "I’ve publicly stated my campaign is about honesty and open government, and this allows voters in Northern Virginia to see I intend to be faithful to that promise."

The "Change Congress" pledge has been promoted as a movement which has bi-partisan support and can reach across party lines. The pledge involves four tenets which candidates can choose to sign. Candidates from all over the country have been encouraged to examine the pledge, with Singh serving as the first to officially sign. Information on the pledge can be found at http://change-congress.org.

Amit Singh signed three tenets of the pledge and agreed not to accept money from lobbyists or PACs, to vote to end earmarks, and to support reform to increase Congressional transparency. The "Change Congress" pledge comes on the heels of the "Earmark Reform" pledge signed by Singh last week in which he agreed to support commonsense reforms of how Congress spends taxpayer dollars. That pledge was sponsored by the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste.

"We’ve gotten tremendous support from voters all throughout Northern Virginia," said Kevin Chand, Director of Technology for the Singh campaign. "Our website and our email system have both been going full speed over the past week with people contacting us to learn more about Amit Singh's candidacy."

As of Monday, the Amit Singh campaign had raised more than $23,000 in the month of March with none of it coming from lobbyists or PACS. The campaign's fundraising numbers took off when a supporter meet and greet raised more than $9,000 in a single day.

"Amit Singh believes elected leaders should be accountable to the people who voted them into office," said Chand. "While that seems obvious to many, unfortunately the elected officials are not getting the message. Mr. Singh is prepared to change that."
